Appendix B4: Marshal Specifics

This section is still under construction and will be for a very long time, since the data still needs to be gathered over the entire long cycle of specialist missions.

However, the theme of the specialist missions as well as the ships that appear are definitely accurate at this point. Only the mission types for each specialist mission are still being gathered.

Specialist Mission Cycle for Marshal rank

Solo Specialist Missions (Marshal Only)

For solo specialist missions, there are wide range of the general difficulty of each solo specialist mission according to the solo specialist mission type the ship is assigned to. This guide tries to give you a good idea of what kind of difficulty you would be expecting for that solo ship.

• If the ship is marked with ^L1 in the specialist mission cycle table below, the mission is trivial, and is quite easy to clear.
• If the ship is marked with ^L2 in the specialist mission cycle table below, the mission will have a slight challenge, but clearing it may only need quite a bit of practice understanding the ship.
• If the ship is marked with ^L3 in the specialist mission cycle table below, then the mission is an average difficulty mission that is not easy, nor is it very hard to clear.
• If the ship is marked with ^L4 in the specialist mission cycle table below, be prepared for a difficult mission which is on a mission type that is less than ideal for that solo ship. You may want to try and train how to use these ships well.
• If the ship is marked with ^L5 in the specialist mission cycle table below, be prepared for a mission type that the solo ship is not even designed to handle. Clearing such a solo specialist mission will likely net you an AAO badge. Thus, you may want to take particular note to try and train on how to use these ships well.

The specialist missions for Marshal rank follows the cycle as shown below.

There are some specialist mission types that deviate from the normal mission types.

• There seems to be a sub-variant of the Dart/Pellet/Laser mission type that does NOT contain laser spreads. Marked with (Δ).
• There's also a sub-variant of the General/Boomerang mission type that DOES include Laser MIRVs. Marked with (Δ).

To find out the correct sequence number for the corresponding details of a specific specialist mission, use the formula (Specialist Mission Number) % 200.

• The % symbol means modulo. This means take the Specialist Mission Number, and use long division to divide it by 200. The result is the remainder, not the quotient.
• For example, if the mission number is #3347, then the sequence number is 147.

The total number of times where each ship appears in any group specialist mission is shown below (excluding Solo Challenges, because every ship has one of its Solo Challenge in the entire mission cycle):

With the list of all specialist missions that can appear, as well as the ships that are available for use in these specialist missions, we can find the ships to upgrade such that we upgrade the least number of ships to cover ALL group specialist missions.

• Finding the solution to this is a Set Covering Problem which is an NP-hard problem. I will not bore you with the details of these 2 terms, but you can read up what is the Set Covering Problem.
  • For the Numerical Example in the website below, replace Camera Location with the ships, and Stadium Areas with the different combinations of group specialist missions:

• If you didn't read that, or didn't understand anything out of that article, it doesn't matter. What you really need to know is that the least amount of ships that you need to upgrade is 20 ships.
  • While a few solutions of 20 ships exist, so far I have found these 20 ships to be acceptable (based on their survivability as a whole).
• If you upgrade these 20 ships in order (since the top few ships appear more times), it will be guaranteed that you would be able to comfortably attempt all group specialist missions.
  • Note that there will be weapon affinity mismatches so you may not always be able to complete the specialist mission comfortably.
  • At the very least, you can get a decent number of credits by being able to attempt the specialist mission in the first place with a well upgraded ship.

Here are the 20 ships to upgrade, in order of what to upgrade first to cover as many group specialist missions first.

• Note that these 20 ships may not be the most economical approach, as you may have already upgraded a couple of other ships that may be able to replace some of these ships.
• You may not have many of these ships unlocked, thus necessitating the need to buy them from the shop and waste credits.

Once you have upgraded these 20 ships, it becomes safe for you to say that you can attempt at least 60% of all Marshal rank specialist missions.

For the most economical approach, I have created a Google Spreadsheet that allow you to input the current upgrade level of all your ships and use the sheet to get advice on which ships to fully upgrade. There is a couple of steps that you need to do if you really want to use this spreadsheet to achieve the most optimum credit-optimizing option, which are detailed in Appendix C. A fair bit of heads-up, the steps may be quite cumbersome.
